Overclocking Guide

Absolute Overclocking #1 Guide For Your Graphics Card to Boost Gaming Performance! Leave a comment

Overclocking your graphics card is an effective way to improve your gaming performance without having to spend a dime. And while it may sound a bit intimidating, overclocking isn’t as complicated as you may think. With a little guidance and willingness to experiment, you can become an expert in overclocking in no time.

It has the potential to increase your card’s maximum clock speed, which in turn increases the maximum amount of power it can draw. By increasing the clock speed of your GPU, you can increase the number of operations it can perform per second, which in turn improves your frame rate and in-game performance. This translates to smoother gameplay, which makes overclocking a great way to turn a budget card into a powerhouse without having to spend a lot of money.

Now that you know the advantages, let's explore how you can overclock your GPU for better gaming performance:

AMD Master Utility

Amd Ryzen Master For Overclocking

Users of AMD-based systems might be interested in AMD Ryzen Master Utility for Overclocking Control, designed specifically for overclocking AMD’s GPUs. If the other tools don’t work, then this will help you push your hardware beyond the limits.

As part of the new basic view, you can automatically overclock your CPU, manually control how much overclocking you want to apply, as well as see important system parameters such as CPU temperature and speed. Additionally, you can toggle between the new “basic view” and “advanced view” to find the overclocking features that suit your needs.

Get an Overclocking Software

MSI Afterburner is a third party program developed by MSI that is designed to optimise graphics cards for better performance. It is downloaded directly from MSI’s website for free. You can run the EXE file once you have extracted the RAR file to install MSI Afterburner. MSI Afterburner comes with RivaTuner Statistics Server, a program that lets you monitor system temperature and component utilisation. If you do not wish to install the software, uncheck the box during installation. Alternatively, you can also try EVGA’s Precision XOC, which also works perfectly on non-EVGA cards as well.

Upon opening the program, move the Power limits slider to the extreme right and the Temperature limits slider according to your preference. If this is your first time overclocking, try to increase your Core clock by 50 MHz and Memory clock by 100 MHz.

Ensure that the overclock is stable by making sure that it does not crash or distort your screen as long as the temperature is below 80 degrees Celsius.

Try Tweaking the Power Plan

High Performance Windows Power Plan

As a default, Windows-based computers use the Balanced Power plan to conserve battery life. To maximise performance, you need to switch it to the “High Performance” plan.

Windows 10 users can easily perform this action by following the Windows + I shortcut to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > High Performance. If the option is not available, they can create a new power plan by clicking on the Create a Power Plans command.

Modify Settings in NVIDIA Control Panel

Nvidia Control Panel

NVIDIA graphics card users whose system contains an NVIDIA graphics card will need to adjust additional settings so that their graphics cards are not throttled by the Power management option in the NVIDIA Control Panel.

The default setting for this is Optimal Power. You should open the NVIDIA Control Panel to tweak the settings. In the NVIDIA Control Panel, open Manage 3D Settings, and then, near Power management mode, select “Prefer maximum performance.”

Boost Your Memory

As you may know, your GPU’s VRAM is used to temporarily store assets like textures used in games. This means that the faster the VRAM in your GPU, the faster it can process these assets, and the more VRAM, the more assets you can store.

You can overclock memory (Video RAM/VRAM) by about 15% to boost performance in games that use memory heavily, especially those with lots of textures to load. However, high-clocked memory can affect performance differently from low-clocked memory. Depending on the game, it will respond in a different fashion to a high memory clock. Some will run much faster without showing a problem, others may show distortions.

With the above steps, even a novice gamer can overclock their GPU without any trouble.
